WAVY News 10 reports that a 61 year-old man has been identified and charged in connection with a felony hit-and-run pedestrian accident that occurred on Sunday, February 6, 2011.

The nighttime accident involved a victim believed to be homeless, who was struck crossing Huntington Avenue towards 64th Street by a driver going south on Huntington at approximately 6:30 pm. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

The driver stopped briefly at the scene after the accident, but eventually drove away. He later called police and informed them that he was the one who hit the victim.

Our sympathies tonight are with the victim, that poor homeless man injured by the cowardly act of a hit and run driver. Although we are glad that the offender turned himself in, that does not excuse his actions. He initially denied responsibility for the crime he committed, leaving the victim without medical attention, possibly to die at the scene.

Hit and run automobile accidents are not only a criminal offense that the state can prosecute—such incidents can be brought to civil court as well. According to statistics compiled by the National Highway Safety Administration, over 40,000 motor vehicle accidents occur on the U.S.’s roadways every year. Many are hit and runs in which the driver never had to accept legal liability for their actions.

Don’t let that happen to you. Contact our firm for a free consultation regarding your Virginia auto accident so that we can review your claim.
